Why should the shunt capacitor be connected in series when reactive power compensation

Due to the extensive use of inductive load equipment, the problem of reactive power in the enterprise power grid is becoming more and more serious. In order to solve the reactive power problem and improve the power factor, industrial users have used shunt capacitors for reactive power compensation. However, in reactive power compensation, shunt capacitors often require series reactors. So when the shunt capacitor is reactive power compensated, why connect the reactor in series? In the case of reactive power compensation, the series reactor of the shunt capacitor mainly plays the role of suppressing the high-order harmonics and limiting the inrush current of the closing gate.

1. Suppress high-order harmonics

In the power system of industrial users, nonlinear loads such as frequency converters and rectifiers are used in large quantities, and harmonics will be generated when non-linear loads are running, resulting in waveform distortion of voltage and current, endangering power capacitors and other electrical equipment. The series reactor of the shunt capacitor can suppress the high-order harmonics, thereby ensuring the stable operation of the power capacitor.

2. Limit the inrush current of the closing gate

At the moment of initial commissioning of the shunt capacitor, a large inrush current is generated, which will have an impact on the shunt capacitor, switching switch, etc. The series reactor of the shunt capacitor can limit the size of the closing inrush current and protect the power capacitor. The purpose of series reactors in most industrial users is to suppress high-order harmonics and ensure that the operation of power capacitors is not affected. For the problem of closing inrush current, a thyristor fast switching switch can be used, which has no inrush current during switching.
